something doubtlessly greater than whatever the devil could offer him. But Jesus’ crown will be so very costly. Jesus’ exaltation by his heavenly Father will only come after he has (and, we could say, because he has) been crucified (see Philippians 2:8–11). In essence, what the devil is offering to Jesus is a crown without a cross.
